It is difficult to watch wild animals while they move, so often biologists analyse characteristics of animal movement paths. One common path characteristic used is tortuousity, measured using the fractal dimension (D). The typical method for estimating fractal D, the divider method, is biased and imprecise. The bias occurs because the path length is truncated. I present a method for minimising the truncation error. The imprecision occurs because sometimes the divider steps land inside the bends of curves, and sometimes they (...) miss the curves. I present three methods for minimising this variation and test the methods with simulated correlated random walks. The traditional divider method significantly overestimates fractal D when paths are short and the range of spatial scales is narrow. The best method to overcome these problems consists of walking the dividers forwards and backwards along the path, and then estimating the path length remaining at the end of the last divider step. Animal movement models allow ecologists to study processes that operate over a wide range of scales. In order to study them, continuous movements of animals are translated into discrete data points, and then modelled as discrete models. This discretization can bias the representation of the movement path. This paper shows that discretizing correlated random movement paths creates a biased path by creating correlations between successive turning angles. The discretization also biases statistical tests for correlated random walks (CRW) and causes an (...) overestimate in distances travelled; a correction is given for these biases. This effect suggests that there is a natural scale to CRWs, but that distance-discretized CRWs are in a sense, scale invariant. Perhaps a new null model for continuous movement paths is needed. Authors need to be aware of the biases caused by discretizing correlated random walks, and deal with them appropriately. (shrink)

The most reliable manuscript of Statius' Achilleid is the Puteaneus , and its authority, against the group QKC, is frequently upheld only by the Codex Etonensis . The readings of this manuscript , which contains, apart from the Achilleid, Maximian, Ovid's Remedium Atnoris and other poems, were collated by C. Schenkl, Wiener Studien, iv , 96 ff., and were used by H. W. Garrod for the O.C.T. of Statius: Klotz in the Teubner 2nd edition merely notes the readings of Schenkl (...) and of the Oxford text. Unfortunately these are neither complete nor always accurate; and the latter should be corrected as follows: 1. In three passages the Oxford text differs from the reading of PEKQ without noting the fact: Ach. i. 145 Non superant is not, as implied, the MS. reading, but Havet's conjecture: PEKQ have nam superant. 306 PEKQ have impulsam , not impulsum. 680 PEKQ ibi, not ubi. On different aspects of natural sciences.

The paper analyses selected philosophical aspects of Stanisław Lem’s Solaris. I argue that there is an interesting similarity between the history of “Solarist studies” –the fictional scientific discipline depicted by Lem and cognitive science. I show that both disciplines go through similar stages as they try to describe their main subject. In the further part of the paper, I focus on two problems identified in cognitive science that can be directly related to the themes found in Solaris: the problem of (...) the detection of intelligence and the problem of the notion of mental representations. I finish the paper by looking at the mysterious guests that stalk the main protagonists and show that they can be understood as heuristic models that are taken into account in the theories of mind uploading. Social constructivists use to say that economists cannot study objective reality, absolute truth does not exist, and economic knowledge is being constructed, not discovered and it depends on temporary culture. Realists notice and admit social conditions which may affect economic theories and unrealistic assumptions of models, but they claim that these models describe the real world, at least to some extent. Ovaj članak propituje socijalno-političke posljedice nasljeđa jednog povijesnog totalitarističkog koncepta. Radi se o fenomenu »fašizma«. Ima li fašizam neku teorijsku, ali i praktičku aktualnost u suvremenom »novom svjetskom poretku«? S unaprijed pretpostavljenim odgovorom da je tomu doista tako, nameću se argumentacijske strategije objašnjenja same pojave fašizma u suvremenosti. Pitanje u naslovu parafrazira naslove dviju važnih knjiga. Radi se o knjizi Giorgia Agambena Ono što ostaje od Auschwitza, te o zbirci tekstova Rastka Močnika, skupljenih pod naslovom Koliko fašizma? Članak pokušava elaborirati (...) samozadanu tematiku preko problematike »biopolitike«. U tu je svrhu kao inspirativan model poslužila teorija imunizacije/imunitarnosti talijanskog filozofa Roberta Esposita. Kroz nju se pokazuje strukturna neizbježnost fašizma u okviru neo-liberalizma u njegovoj imunitarnoj paradigmi. Njegovo »količinsko« smanjenje vezano je uz politiku solidarnosti i javnog prostora .This article examines socio-political consequences of the heritage of one of the historical totalitarian concepts. It is a phenomenon of “fascism”. Does fascism have any theoretical, but also practical actuality in the contemporary “new world order”? With the pre-assumption that it is the matter of fact, certain argumentation strategies of explanation of the appearance of fascism in present days are imposed. Question in the title paraphrases titles of two important books. It is a book by Giorgio Agamben, Remnants of Auschwitz, and a collection of essays by Rastko Močnik, collected under the title How Much Fascism? This article tries to elaborate this selfimposed subject through the issue of “biopolitics”. For this purpose, as an inspiring model, the theory of immunization/immunitarity presented by the Italian philosopher Roberto Esposito is used. Through that theory a structural inevitability of fascism in the framework of neo-liberalism shows itself in the immunitarian paradigm. The “quantitative” reduction of fascism is related to the policy of solidarity and public sphere. (shrink)
